New Bloomington facility will double shelter capacity, improve animal welfare, and provide essential services for Inland Empire residents

Bloomington, California (Times Media Service) – San Bernardino County has officially broken ground on a $65 million animal care center in Bloomington, marking a major investment in animal welfare and community services for Inland Empire residents.
Major Investment in Animal Welfare: San Bernardino County Animal Care Center
The new San Bernardino County Animal Care Center, a $65 million project, is set to transform animal services in the region. The facility, located in Bloomington, will be 56,000 square feet and is expected to open by spring 2027. The San Bernardino County Animal Care Center will nearly double the county’s capacity to house and care for animals, providing urgently needed space and resources.
Expanded Services and Modern Facilities
The San Bernardino County Animal Care Center will feature on-site veterinary services, modern kennels, and dedicated play areas for dogs and cats. These enhancements will help reduce animal stress and improve their chances of adoption. The center will also support the county’s mobile animal care unit, which plays a vital role during emergencies and in rural communities.
Addressing Shelter Overcrowding in the Inland Empire
Overcrowding has been a persistent issue in local shelters. In 2024 alone, the county’s Devore Animal Shelter took in more than 7,700 dogs and cats. The new San Bernardino County Animal Care Center will help alleviate this pressure by providing more space and better facilities for both animals and staff.
Community Benefits and Economic Impact
Beyond animal care, the San Bernardino County Animal Care Center will create jobs during construction and after opening. The center will offer volunteer opportunities, support responsible pet ownership, and partner with local organizations to strengthen community ties. Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr. emphasized the importance of the project, stating it represents a significant step in providing compassionate care for both animals and residents.
Commitment to Compassion and Public Service
The county’s shift from “animal control” to “animal care” highlights a renewed focus on compassion and public service. The San Bernardino County Animal Care Center is central to this mission, aiming to improve animal welfare and make the Inland Empire a better place for families and their pets.
