The San Bernardino Police Department is reminding drivers to slow down, follow the speed limit and use extra caution in school zones as students prepare to return to school. The department says the guidance is part of August’s Back to School Safety Month.
Drivers behind a school bus displaying a stop sign and flashing red lights must stop and remain stopped while the red lights are on, allowing students to board or exit safely. On any two-lane road without a median or center turn lane, drivers in both directions must stop.
The department also is urging drivers to follow school policies and procedures for dropping off and picking up students, watch for children rushing to catch a bus or getting off one, and yield to pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks.
This time of year brings increased activity around schools and it’s crucial to be mindful behind the wheel. Every driver plays a role in keeping children safe by slowing down and paying close attention in and around school zones. It is all our responsibility to ensure children get to and from school safely.

Stop for school buses and watch for children rushing to catch the bus or exiting.
