HESPERIA, Calif., July 14 (Our Hesperia) — Travelers heading to Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area in Hesperia are being told to stay out of the water as California State Parks keeps the lake under a Danger Advisory because of a harmful algae bloom.

The park, at 13990 Sawpit Canyon Rd. off Highway 138 and Cleghorn Road, says the advisory means visitors should avoid the water, including wading. State Parks says harmful algae warnings are updated weekly at entrances and other water-contact areas.

In a release, California State Parks said testing by the California Department of Water Resources found increased microcystin toxin levels in the lake. The agency said swim beaches were closed and public water-contact recreation was prohibited until further notice.

Officials also warned visitors not to let pets into or near the water, not to drink lake water and not to eat fish or shellfish from it. The park page says Silverwood Lake can experience natural algae blooms, and it directs visitors to check posted advisories before entering the recreation area.
