BIG BEAR CITY, Calif., June 29 (Our Hesperia) — One of Jackie and Shadow’s eaglets, Sandy, fell from the Big Bear bald eagle nest Sunday morning during what Friends of Big Bear Valley described as an accidental fledge, or ‘fludge,’ as live camera footage showed the young bird lose her footing and drop from view.

Friends of Big Bear Valley, the nonprofit that runs the 24/7 nest camera, said Sandy appeared to move to another tree or branch outside the camera’s view and was likely resting or getting her bearings. The group’s media manager, Jenny Voisard, told the Los Angeles Times that the organization had not picked Sandy up.

Sandy and her sibling, Luna, hatched in early April and were about 12 weeks old when the incident happened, according to the nest history cited in the reporting. Friends of Big Bear Valley said Jackie, Sandy’s mother, was nearby after the fall and that Jackie and Shadow would continue to follow and feed her.

The organization said camera operators were still searching for Sandy after the fall. CBS Los Angeles reported that Friends of Big Bear Valley also warned visitors to stay away from the habitat during the sensitive period for the eagle family.
