NEW ORLEANS, June 27 (DC Times Online) — James Carville said Democrats should consider a formal “schism” after New York primary wins by progressive candidates, saying he “can’t be in the same party” with Darializa Avila Chevalier and telling party critics to form their own movement.

On a podcast appearance, the veteran Democratic strategist said, “I actually do think it’s time for Democrats to talk the s-word. Schism. I really do,” and added, “I’m done, I’m not in that political party.” He also said, “Start your own movement” and “Form your own party.”

Carville said he did not want to be in a party “that denies the right of the state of Israel to exist.” He said candidates with views he opposes should have no place in the party.

The comments came after New York Democratic primary wins by Avila Chevalier, Claire Valdez and Brad Lander, according to news reports. Those reports said Avila Chevalier unseated Rep. Adriano Espaillat, Valdez defeated Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and Lander beat Rep. Dan Goldman.

Carville had earlier warned in a New York Times op-ed that the party was moving toward a “civilized civil war” and said such a split was “necessary” but should wait until after the 2026 midterm elections.
