WASHINGTON, June 29 (DC Times Online) — Federal authorities are seeking full prosecution after vandalism damaged the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said investigators believe the liner was cut for about 350 feet and seven arrests have been made.

Speaking on Fox News, Burgum said the damage appeared to have been caused by a box cutter or a similar sharp instrument. He said multiple citations were issued and 18 police reports were filed, and added, “These are our most sacred monuments, and they are gonna be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

A court filing and a National Park Service account described the liner as cut with a sharp knife or razor. But the number of arrests and citations remained unclear across public accounts: NBC News reported President Donald Trump said six people had been arrested and seven cited, while the BBC reported U.S. Park Police said five arrests and five federal citations had been made.

Burgum said fencing was being installed around the Reflecting Pool as the National Mall prepared for July 4 festivities.
