LOS ANGELES, July 15 (Our Los Angeles) — Los Angeles organizers have opened Games-time volunteer applications for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, kicking off the city’s two-year countdown to one of the biggest events it will host in decades.

LA28 said the program could draw up to 60,000 volunteers, or its Volunteer Crew, to help stage the Games. The organizing committee said the volunteer portal opened July 14, 2026, and that people who already expressed interest will receive an email with next steps. LA28 also said all applicants are welcome, even if they did not register early.

Why do the volunteers matter?

LA28 described the effort in simple terms: “Every great production needs a crew.” The committee says volunteers will help with the behind-the-scenes work that keeps a global sporting event moving, from guiding spectators and athletes to handling technology, transportation and event operations.

The volunteer program is divided into eight categories: communications, driving, experience, medical, ceremonies, operations, sport and technology. Some assignments will require specialized skills, including medicine and language translation, LA28 said.

Where will volunteers work?

Most volunteer roles will be in the Los Angeles area, LA28 said. But the Games will also need help at other host sites across the country. The organizing committee said assignments will extend to Oklahoma City and to soccer venues in New York, Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis, San José and San Diego.

That spread reflects how the 2028 Games will reach beyond Los Angeles itself. LA28 says the Olympic Games will run July 14-30, 2028, and the Paralympic Games will run Aug. 15-27, 2028.

What makes this Olympics different?

LA28 says the 2028 Games will make Los Angeles the third city to host the Olympics three times, after 1932 and 1984. The Paralympic Games will also be Los Angeles’ first.

How is the volunteer program being organized?

LA28 says the Games-time volunteer application portal was built in partnership with Deloitte. The committee also says the program has a sponsor, Delta Air Lines.

In addition to Games-time roles, LA28 says there are community volunteering opportunities tied to local organizations in Los Angeles. Those efforts focus on sustainability, restoration and the wellbeing of venue cities.

What happens next?

LA28 has said it will give at least seven days’ notice before the volunteer application closes. The committee has not yet published the full deadline or a complete breakdown of volunteer needs by city or venue.

For now, the rollout gives Los Angeles a clear sign that the countdown is shifting from planning to staffing. As LA28 chief executive Reynold Hoover told Reuters, recent World Cup success showed “the power of sport to unite people,” and volunteers will be a key part of that experience.
