Miami, Florida (Times Media Service) – A Carnival Cruise Line passenger’s missing luggage saga has come to an unexpected conclusion, revealing a theft by a fellow traveler just doors away from the victim’s cabin. Jason and Tammy Merritt, celebrating their 26th wedding anniversary aboard the Carnival Magic, experienced a frustrating ordeal when Jason’s suitcase vanished at the start of their 8-night Southern Caribbean cruise on February 8, 2025.

The couple’s relaxing getaway quickly turned into a nightmare as they spent their entire vacation without Jason’s belongings, forced to purchase necessities and make do with what they had. Despite repeatedly informing Carnival staff about the missing luggage and its location, which they tracked using Apple AirPods inside the bag, their pleas went unheeded.

“We kept showing them, ‘Hey, we’re tracking it. Hey, it’s here.’ You know, ‘Can you go to deck zero?’ No, it’s not going to be there. You know, we’ve searched all the floors, every room’s been checked. There’s nothing,” Jason Merritt recounted.

The mystery was finally solved on March 1, 2025, more than 20 days after the cruise ended, when Carnival staff located the suitcase in another passenger’s cabin just a few doors down from the Merritts’ room. The thief, who allegedly took the bag because she liked its appearance, had booked back-to-back cruises, which explained why the luggage remained on board for weeks.

While the Merritts were relieved to have the suitcase returned, their joy was short-lived. Upon inspection, they discovered that approximately 39 items were missing, including clothing, shoes, toiletries, medications, and even the key to their Ford Bronco.

“Unfortunately, most of my clothes didn’t [make it home]. She took my slacks, my belt, all my dress shirts, both pairs of shoes, ALL OF MY BOXERS, the key to my Bronco, my toiletry bag was empty, meds were gone, my glasses, all of my shorts, couple other shirts and my Rangers Spring Training hat,” Jason shared on social media.

The incident has left the Merritts frustrated and seeking compensation. They estimate the value of the missing items at around $1,000 and are considering legal action. Carnival Cruise Line has reportedly banned the thief from all future sailings with the company.

As the Merritts navigate the aftermath of this unfortunate event, their story serves as a cautionary tale for cruise passengers to remain vigilant with their belongings, even in the seemingly secure environment of a cruise ship.
