OCEANSIDE, Calif., July 1 (Laguna Beach Daily) — A Southern California couple says a moving company more than doubled the price of their interstate move and is still holding their belongings after a disputed delivery attempt in North Carolina.

John Nelson said he and his spouse hired a moving broker for a move from Oceanside, California, to North Carolina. He said the original contract was for more than $16,000 and that they paid a $7,000 deposit.

Nelson said movers arrived at the couple’s home at the end of May and claimed there were more items than first assessed, lifting the total price to $32,000. He said the couple told the company they would not be in North Carolina until June 10, but the movers attempted delivery on June 3.

When no one was there to accept the shipment, Nelson said the company added a redelivery fee. He said he suspected the June 3 delivery may have been staged after reviewing video of the truck arriving.

“They have $30,000 and our belongings… they are essentially holding it for ransom,” Nelson said.

Nelson said the couple filed police reports in Oceanside and in their destination city in North Carolina and submitted complaints to the Better Business Bureau.
