SYDNEY, June 25 (World Daily Times) — Leah Stewart briefly woke in intensive care after doctors reduced her sedation and extubated her, and told her mother and partner Fernando, “I love you,” according to updates from her brother, Joshua Stewart.

Joshua Stewart said Leah had spent 10 days in an induced coma after a shark attack at Coogee Beach in Sydney on June 13. ABC News reported, based on the family’s updates, that she had been in critical condition for 12 days and had undergone multiple surgeries.

Joshua Stewart said the brief period of wakefulness came after “a week of life-support and repeat surgeries,” and allowed Leah to speak with family at her bedside.

ABC News reported that Leah is now awake, no longer in critical condition and able to communicate with family and medical staff.

The family also said she was reunited with her young daughter, August, for the first time since the attack. Joshua Stewart said it was the first night Leah and August had ever spent apart.
